Staff Reporter
TURTLE BEACHED: Volunteers of the TREE Foundation looking at the dead green turtle at Injambakkam early on Friday.
CHENNAI:
A dead albino green turtle was washed ashore at a beach in Injambakkam Kuppam on the city's outskirts on Friday morning.
Volunteers of TREE Foundation's Kadal Aamai Padhukavalargal Sangam, who were on beach patrol duty, to protect the Olive Ridley turtles, noticed the reptile. A volunteer, Supraja Dharini said there was big gash on the right side of the turtle's shell. The volunteers said the turtle could have come under a stationary trawler. The female green turtles (larger than the Olive Ridley) are found in the Gulf of Mannar region in the State and in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The reptile was 37 inches long and 25 inches wide.
Volunteers interested in turtle conservation can contact her on 24492242 or 94440-52242.
