Stenographer's Guild Founding Day

Staff Reporter

CHENNAI: About 100 children of policemen would learn `Newrite', a computer-aided stenography course at the Stenographers' Guild, C. Sylendra Babu, Joint Commissioner of Police (South), said on Sunday.

He was speaking at the `Founding Day' celebration of the Stenographers' Guild, established in the city in 1937. "I regret not having learnt stenography as a student. I could have executed my official duties more efficiently then," he said.

"It is often said that the coming in of new gadgets and technology erodes mental skills. It is fortunate that institutes such as the Stenographers' Guild maintain mental skills of the past and at the same time, orient them to the new era," said N. Ravi, Editor, The Hindu . The interface between mental skills of the past and technology is valuable, he added.

"These skills could be used in the field of BPO operations," he said, suggesting that the course be taught to more college students. Many of them, he said, were examination-oriented and lacked communication skills. "This will make them employable," he added. Mr. Ravi released a compact disk on the `Newrite' course on the occasion.
