TV news bulletins spur newspaper readership: study

Special Correspondent

Survey is confined only to Andhra Pradesh

HYDERABAD: Seeing TV news bulletins prompts and furthers newspaper readership. Credibility of newspapers has improved as compared to the period of pre-news channels. News channels have evoked latent quest for "latest news". Repeat and hyping of certain coverage in the news bulletins of news channels in particular is not viewed positively and in fact is viewed as "irritating" or "too much".

These were the findings of a "tracking study" conducted by the Centre for Media Studies, an independent professional forum, in December 2005.

N. Bhaskar Rao, CMS founder-chairman, briefed the media on Sunday about the survey on "News media's credibility--the case of Andhra Pradesh".

The survey was conducted only in Andhra Pradesh. Also it was limited to urban areas. Only three newspapers--Eenadu, Andhra Jyoti and Vaartha--figured prominently in the study.

Analysis

The survey was conducted among those who were both "viewers of TV" and also "readers of newspaper." From each of three regions 200 households having access to TV and subscribing to (at least) one newspaper were sampled. However, the analysis was limited to 450 interviews. Overall a significant majority of urbanites in Andhra Pradesh depend on news channels for news about the State.
