`Human rights should include peace, progress'

Special Correspondent

Poverty alleviation is vital to ensure equality

COIMBATORE: Peace and progress of every section of society must be a part of any exercise to protect human rights, the president of the All India Congress Committee Human Rights Department, Muralidhar C. Bhandare, said here on Sunday.

Basic education

"We have guaranteed fundamental rights and the Supreme Court enforces them. Even education for children in the 6-14 age group has been made a basic right," he said while inaugurating the West Zone Conference of the Tamil Nadu Congress Human Right Department.

Exhorting party cadre to work for equal rights to all, he said poverty alleviation was vital to achieving it. Poverty stood at 26 per cent and it needed to be brought down to below 10 per cent over the next 10 years.

Family income

Equal opportunity for men and women to earn would raise the family income and in turn help remove poverty. He regretted that the country lacked unity and this had hampered progress. "We must all have a culture of excellence."

India led in protecting human rights. Through its own Independence struggle, it had initiated the process of eliminating colonialism elsewhere in the world. A number of other countries benefited.

The Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Personnel, Public Grievances, Law and Justice, E.M. Sudarsana Natchiappan, said the Centre was focussed on development in the State.

Besides infrastructure, funds were provided for basic education too.

Mr. Natchiappan said Rs.300 crores had been allocated for the State under the Sarva Shiksha Abhyan Scheme that aimed to provide basic education to all.

Good roads

The Centre was providing funds for good roads in the State.

While all these schemes had been initiated since the Congress-led Government took over at the Centre, one wondered why the State Government announced a number of schemes just ahead of the Assembly elections.
