Bangalore
Direct train to Varanasi needed Sir, While most State capitals have one or more direct train to Varanasi, the Railways have not introduced any train from Bangalore to Varanasi. I echo the sentiments of many Kannadigas who cannot fulfil their long cherished dream to visit Varanasi because there are no direct trains from Bangalore. Till a direct train to Varanasi is introduced, the bi-weekly train between Bangalore and Patna (Sanghamitra Express) should be diverted via Varanasi. I urge the Railway authorities to look into this suggestion.
N. Somanath, Bangalore Provide relief to mine workers Sir, In last year's Budget, the Union and the State Governments failed to mention any relief measures for the mine workers who lost their jobs after the Bharath Gold Mines Ltd. at Kolar Gold Fields was shut down. The company did not provide them with any alternative jobs, and the families of these workers have been put to hardship. It is unfortunate that the Centre has not taken steps to resettle these workers, considering that the mines are under its control. The coalition Government headed by H.D. Kumaraswamy should ensure that the workers are provided some relief. G.T. Rajan, Bangalore Increase frequency of buses Sir, Buses from Kempe Gowda Bus Station to Thigalarapalya and Andhrahalli are always full. The frequency of buses on this route is limited, and the buses get filled up at the starting point itself. This causes inconvenience to passengers, particularly schoolchildren and office-goers. I request the authorities to increase the frequency of buses, or at least run special buses for children and women to avoid congestion at peak hours.
K.R. Raghavendra, Bangalore Concession for senior citizens Sir, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has reduced its rates thanks to competition from mobile users and because many people are surrendering their landlines. However, BSNL should offer concessions to senior citizens on the landline tariff, just as public sector undertakings such as airlines and government departments such as the Income Tax Department have done.
H.R. Ramanujam, Bangalore Water connections Sir, Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy has promised that he will give priority to roads. However, he should also ensure that drinking water is supplied to the new layouts. While approving the construction of houses, the city municipal councils collect money from site owners for providing water connections. But water connections are not provided immediately. The Chief Minster should intervene to ensure that the officials provide water connections at once. Sham Sunder, Bangalore Readers can also email their letters to letters.bangalore @thehindu.co.in
