Use of chemicals has damaged large tracts of land, says MLA

  • Farmers have been indiscriminately using chemicals and fertilizers for high yields
  • Some of them are reverting to traditional and organic manures and natural farming practices
  • Authorities urged to create awareness about organic manure

Belgaum: Ramesh L. Kudachi, Congress MLA from the city, on Monday called upon farmers to introspect to ascertain the damage they have done to the soil with the indiscriminate use of chemicals and pesticides to fetch higher yields in the last four decades.

Addressing a seminar on "Organic manure and natural farming practices" here on Monday, he said farmers have been indiscriminately using chemicals, fertilizers and pesticides for getting high yields.

But, they have not realised the damage done to the soil and human health in the process. Large tracts of fertile lands became infertile and more are on the verge of being rendered useless for farming following the use of chemicals. The seminar was organised by a city-based agro agency to promote "ready to use" organic manure in association with the Department of Agriculture.

Mr. Kudachi said the residuals from the chemicals are passed on to human beings and livestock through foodgrains, vegetables and fruits.

He said there is a growing level of awareness about health all over the world forcing farmers to revert to traditional and organic manures and natural farming practices.

He said that authorities of the agriculture department should create awareness about organic manure in villages.

Joint Director of Department of Agriculture Siddalingaiah said the Government is encouraging use of organic manure and scientific farming practices. Farmers should be careful in use of products sold as organic manure and ascertain the veracity of the claims made about such products before using them.

Progressive farmers from the city and surrounding areas participated in the seminar.
