Raichur: The district administration has banned the import of poultry from Maharashtra and from other neighbouring districts into Raichur district. The sale of chicken and eggs has been banned in the district till the Department of Animal Husbandry confirms that the situation with regard to bird flu is under control. The district administration has appealed to the people not to eat poultry products for sometime. It has asked the civic bodies in the district to keep a watch on slaughterhouses until the ban is lifted. Deputy Commissioner Tushar Girinath said at an emergency meeting here on Monday that a special team of officials from the Veterinary Department has been constituted to visit all poultry farms in the district and take stock of the situation and submit a report immediately. He asked the team to take the help of Revenue Department officials, village accountants and secretaries of gram panchayats while going ahead with their task and give much publicity about the outbreak of bird flu and educate the villagers in handling the situation. The Deputy Commissioner asked the officials of the Department of Animal Husbandry to take precautionary steps. The department should provide masks and gloves and vaccines to all workers at poultry farms.
