MCD may remove `guilty' engineers

NEW DELHI: The MCD is likely to remove about 80 engineers from its Building Department on Tuesday against whom departmental inquiries are pending. The decision comes after the Delhi High Court reprimanded the civic body last week for failing to take action against guilty officials who ignored unauthorised constructions in their areas.

The engineers who will be shifted hold the rank of executive engineer, assistant engineer and junior engineer. This will be the first major action against `guilty' engineers since the civic body started its citywide demolition drive against illegal structures in December last year following a High Court order.

Seven held for betting

NEW DELHI: Seven people were arrested from different parts of the Capital this Sunday for allegedly running betting rackets on the fifth one-day International cricket match between India and Pakistan. During a raid conducted by the Crime Branch, five people were arrested at Rajouri Garden in West Delhi. They accused identified as Manjeet Singh, Kamal Kumar, Raj Kumar, Subhash and Tarun Kumar had accepted rs. 6 lakhs as betting amount. In another case, the Najafgarh police of South-West Delhi arrested Manoj, Pawan and Ram Avtar. The raiding team recovered Rs. 81,000 of stake money, nine mobile phones and a register from their possession.

Shiv Sena worker arrested

NEW DELHI: A group of Shiv Sena workers, angry over some remarks allegedly passed against party chief Bal Thackeray in a programme on Zee News a couple of days ago, attacked a vehicle of the Hindi TV news channel on K.G. Marg here on Monday. According to the police, the group broke the windshield of an outstation broadcasting van of the channel around 3-15 p.m. The police soon reached the spot and arrested one person, identified as Hari Om, an alleged Shiv Sena worker. The vehicle in which the Shiv Sena workers had arrived has also been seized.

Two nabbed

NEW DELHI: Two persons, including an environment assistant, have been arrested by the Anti-Corruption Branch of the State Government on charges of demanding and accepting bribe.

On Monday, the Anti-Corruption Branch arrested the environment assistant posted at the Vikas Sadan office, Mohinder Singh, for allegedly demanding and accepting Rs. 2,000 from one Amit Aggarwal for stamp duty on a conveyance deed of a house. In another case reported on Saturday, Satish Sehgal was arrested for receiving a bribe of Rs. 1,000 from a blueline bus owner.

Student detained

NEW DELHI: The Delhi police on Monday detained a student in the Tughlak Road area at around 4-20 p.m. when he strayed on to the road that had been cordoned off for French President Jacques Chirac's convoy to pass. The unidentified student, who was on foot, was later released after questioning.

Special cricket match

NEW DELHI: The East Delhi police and Nagrik Suraksha Samiti of Shakarpur in East Delhi on Monday organised a cricket match between two teams, comprising largely of slum dwellers, as part of the Delhi Police Week celebrations. Hundreds of local residents and senior police officers witnessed the match played between Eagle and Star on the grounds of Lovely Public School.
