dated February 22, 1956: B.C. Roy replies to critics

Dr. B.C. Roy, Chief Minister of West Bengal, stoutly defended the proposal for "reunion" of West Bengal and Bihar when he replied to the debate on the Governor's address in the Assembly on February 20. Raising his voice above the repeated jibes from the Opposition benches that "you betrayed West Bengal," Dr. Roy declared that in the demarcation of States, though it was an important point, linguism could not be the dominating factor. The first consideration was political security and economic prosperity and development for the common good of the people. Ridiculing the apprehensions that Bengal would be wiped out in the united States of West Bengal and Bihar, Dr. Roy said that as long as "Vande Mataram" and "Janagana Mana" prevailed, Bengal would not disappear. He said there were several advantages in the reunion. There could be integrated development of river valleys.
