This Day That Age
We regret to record the death of Dr. James H. Cousins at the Mission Hospital in Madanapalle on February 20. Dr. Cousins was admitted to the hospital when he fell down in the dining hall of his home and sustained bleeding injuries on his head. The 83-year-old poet, educationist and artist was Principal of the Madanapalle Theosophical College for several years. His 22 books on poetry and drama, collected and published by the Kalakshetra, and an equal number of prose works on art, education and philosophy reveal, apart from his love of art in general and his own creative talents as a poet, his great experience of life. Born in Belfast (Ireland), Dr. James Henry Cousins came to India in 1915. Soon after his arrival, he became the literary editor of New India, of which Dr. Annie Besant was the editor. The organiser of art galleries in Mysore in 1924 and in Trivandrum in 1935, Dr. Cousins was the head of the Department of Fine Arts, Travancore University and Art Adviser to the Government of Travancore for 14 years. He was also Vice-President of Kalakshetra, Adyar.
