SAARC bridge tournament

KOLKATA: The fourth SAARC bridge championship, involving Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal and India, will be held here from Saturday. The five-day championship will see more than 120 players participating in pairs, open and team events.

All the top Indian players will be seen in action at the tournament. The host will be fielding 11 Open and three ladies teams mainly comprising players from the recently concluded winter National Ruia Trophy winner and runner-up and from Railways.

Competitions will be held for pairs on Saturday and Sunday and for team and Open on the next three days. The Pairs event will have prize money while trophies would be awarded for the other events.

The championship was held for the first time in Mumbai. It travelled to

Karachi and Dhaka before returning to India this year. Four Pakistani, seven Bangladeshi and two teams each from Nepal and Sri Lanka have confirmed their participation, according to organising secretary, Arijit Guha.

Pakistan, Sri Lanka and India are expected to field ladies teams. — Special Correspondent
