CHENNAI: Reliance Infocomm has slashed handset prices, making the instrument a lot more affordable. Effective Tuesday, Reliance Infocomm, the largest buyer and importer of CDMA mobile handsets in the country, brought down the handset prices by as much as 40 per cent in the case of black and white mobile phones and 15 per cent in the case of colour ones. The base model black and white LG handset will now be available for a basement bargain price of Rs. 1,500, a reduction of as much as 40 per cent from Rs. 2,500. The overall reduction in the black and while segment will range from 15 per cent to 40 per cent. Similarly, it will offer colour LG handsets at Rs. 3,800, down from Rs 4,500. This will be a 15 per cent saving for consumers. The company, it may be recalled, had already come out with the `India one' offer on call tariffs. The reduction in handset prices is expected to have a significant impact on the Indian telecom market. One may have to wait and see how the other leading handsets brands like Nokia and Motorola react to the Reliance move.
