Volvo opens technology centre

Special Correspondent

It will support the group's IT, truck product development activities

  • IT division will increase outsourcing from India
  • 3P unit on a strategic expansion mode

BANGALORE: Volvo on Tuesday inaugurated its new technology centre at Bagmane Park in Bangalore. The centre will support Volvo Group's IT and truck product development activities. The facility was inaugurated by Eric Leblanc, Managing Director, Volvo India, Ulf Nilsson, CEO, Volvo IT and Anders Ydergard, Senior Vice President, Volvo 3P Product Development.

In the backdrop of increasing levels of operations in Asia and within India, Volvo 3P, a business unit within the Volvo Group, will now focus on building India as a base for truck product development aimed at supporting strategic expansion in Asia, while Volvo IT will increase its sourcing from India and support its growing customer business in the country.

The Asian market is becoming increasingly important for the Volvo Group. To better support the customers, Volvo 3P has decided on a strategic expansion in Asia. Mr. Ydergard said the group's business was expanding in Asia and "we see strengthening of our activities here in Bangalore to support this growth".

The Volvo IT division in India focuses on providing IT services to the Volvo Group, Volvo Car Corporation and other external customers and is also the hub for Asia for competitive sourcing. Volvo IT provides extensive application management and infrastructure support across Volvo's business areas, including global dealer business support functions, build-up of SAP competence, IT infrastructure and product lifecycle management.

"With the opening of this technology centre, Bangalore is now playing an increasingly important role in supporting the Volvo Group", said Mr. Leblanc.
