Tiger dies of `poisoning' at Itanagar zoo
Sushanta Talukdar
GUWAHATI:
A Royal Bengal Tiger died of suspected poisoning at the Itanagar Zoo on Tuesday. The two-year-old male tiger had fallen ill along with two other Royal Bengal Tigers and a leopard. The illness, zoo authorities suspect, was caused by miscreants giving poisoned meat to the animals.
15 rounded up
The police have rounded up 15 persons in connection with the suspected poisoning. Meat samples collected from tiger enclosures have been sent to the Forensic Science Laboratory at Guwahati.
The deceased tiger was on saline feed after being tranquillised, as it did not respond to antidotes administered to all the four affected animals.
The Chief Wildlife Warden, Arunachal Pradesh, told The Hindu that he had immediately contacted experts at the Delhi Zoo and administered antidotes to the tigers. The two Royal Bengal Tigers and leopard responded to the drugs and were stated to be out of danger. Police interrogation was on. Sources did not rule out the possibility of involvement of zoo employees in the poisoning.
