J. Venkatesan
New Delhi:
The Election Commission on Monday pulled up Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, West Bengal and Union Territory of Pondicherry for tardy progress in the execution of non-bailable warrants (NBWs) pending against criminals and others. The Commission held a meeting with the Chief Secretaries, the Directors-General of Police and senior officials of these States, which are going to Assembly polls in April or May.
The Full Commission, under the chairmanship of B.B. Tandon, Chief Election Commissioner, with N. Gopalaswami and Navin B. Chawla, Election Commissioners, held separate meetings with the senior officers and reviewed poll preparedness.
It discussed the final publication of the electoral rolls, issue of Elector's Photo Identity Cards, execution of the NBWs, unearthing of illegal arms, ammunition and explosives, law and order and the security scenario, transfer of officials and other requirements.
The Commission impressed upon the Chief Secretaries and the DGPs to expedite the execution of NBWs. It was desired that the police speed up the drive to unearth illegal arms, ammunition and explosives.
