The works would be commenced after finalising the tender, said the Municipal Commissioner, K.R. Selvaraj.

He said on Tuesday that to treat domestic wastewater a treatment plant had been formed.

The sewerage would be taken in pipelines to the treatment plant where sullage would be segregated and used as fertiliser.

Work to begin in June

For the scheme, Rs 36 crores would be spent. The Commissioner said that the Government would decide the agency to execute the work and tenders would be floated. The work is expected to start only from June after the Assembly elections. Regarding the collection of property tax, the Commissioner said that already 75 per cent of the property tax had been collected.

Commercial complex

From March 1, the Municipality would conduct an intensive drive for collection of Property Tax and Professional tax.

Mr. Selvaraj said it was proposed to construct a big commercial complex with vehicle parking in Abdul Gani market. If the Government approved the plan and project formulated at a cost of Rs 10 crores, the works would be undertaken in two phases. More than 200 shops would be built and arrangements made to park a minimum of 250 cars.

Tenders had been called for the proposed commercial complex at the old Erode Town Elementary school premises. Parking facilities would be provided in the basement.

On the first floor 35 shops would be built. Similarly the Municipal Nethaji market would be improved at a cost of Rs 60 lakhs.

The causeway bridge across Perumpallam Odai had been damaged affecting vehicular traffic.

So at a cost of Rs 75 lakhs a new bridge across the Perumpallam Odai would be constructed for which tenders had been called for.
