BELLARY: Bellary district is free from bird flu and there is no need to panic, Deputy Commissioner Aravind Srivastav has said. He told presspersons here on Tuesday that although no case of bird flu was reported in the district, he has asked the officials of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Department, to be alert about birds dropping dead besides urging people to report any such incident to the authorities concerned. Poultry vehicles were being checked at check posts to ensure that no chickens were brought from outside the district. Deputy Director of Animal Husbandry Sriram Reddy said there were 153 poultry farms in the district and there were about 26 lakh birds in them. Nearly 60 random blood samples from various poultries were collected and sent to the laboratory in Madhya Pradesh for conducting tests. The report of blood samples sent earlier, before the outbreak of disease in Maharashtra, was negative, he said. Mr. Sriram Reddy said poultry farmers procured chicks from the hatcheries within the district and from Koppal. Most of the poultry feed was available locally and only one item is brought from Karwar.
