Man held in theft cases

> DAVANGERE: > The Chennagiri police have arrested a man who allegedly lifted two-wheelers and stole computer systems and submersible motors from different places. The police have recovered from him goods estimated at Rs. 3.96 lakhs. The name of the arrested was given as Prakash of Dasikatte in Holalkere taluk. Ten two-wheelers, four submersible motors, an oil motor and tractor flow and a few computer sets were recovered from him. — Staff Correspondent

Two groups clash, 12 arrested

> GULBARGA: > The police have arrested 12 persons in connection with a group clash between the people belonging to two communities over a property dispute at Shakapur in Jewargi taluk in Gulbarga district on Monday evening. The police said on Tuesday that they resorted to mild lathicharge to disperse the two groups in the village and arrested 12 persons in this connection. — Special Correspondent

> Raichur: > A woman died and several others were injured when a tractor ran over them while they were asleep on the campus of a school at K. Gudadinni in Manvi taluk on Tuesday. — Staff Correspondent

Woman dies of burns

> RAICHUR: > Devamma (20), who sustained burns when a lantern exploded on February 15, died at the Rajiv Gandhi Superspeciality Hospital on Monday. The police said the accident occurred when she was pouring kerosene into the lantern at the house f Annapurnamma at Jadaladinni in Deodurga taluk. The Gabbur police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

Dies in accident

> Bidar: > A man was killed and three others were injured when an autorickshaw collided with a lorry on Mumbai-Hyderabad National Highway in Humnabad on Tuesday. The victim, Siddareddy Eerappareddy, 42, died on the spot. The injured Rajesh Adiveppa Reddy, Sanjiv Hanumanth Reddy and Eerabhadrappa have been admitted to Humnabad hospital. A case has been registered at the Mannaekhalli police station. — Staff Correspondent

Suicide

> RAICHUR: > A 20-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself to death at her house in Lingsugur on Monday. The police gave the name of the victim as Kantemma, wife of Prakash Bindalkunti. The police said she took the extreme step unable to bear the alleged harassment from her husband and in-laws. The Lingsugur police have registered a case. — Staff Correspondent

> Bidar: > The International Academy of Creative Teaching organised a two- day workshop on creative teaching skills for teachers of the Karnataka Public School in Bidar on Monday. Resource persons Rajendra Joshi, Rashmi G and Manuja Sahay delivered lectures on communication skills. College vice-president B.G. Shetkar, secretary Baburao Patil Sirgapur, and principal Vidya Patil were present. — Staff Correspondent

Two killed in accident

> KARWAR: > Noor Mohammed, who was driving a lorry, and Daval Sab, the cleaner, were killed when the lorry fell into a gorge at Anshi Ghat on Tuesday. Two persons sitting on the top of the lorry escaped unhurt. A woman who was in the cabin jumped out of the lorry. She sustained minor injuries.

Sonia Gandhi coming

> PANAJI: > Congress president Sonia Gandhi will arrive in Goa on a two-day visit on Wednesday.

Goa Pradesh Congress Committee President Ravi Naik said a convention will be held in the city on Wednesday, which will be attended by over 5,000 party workers and addressed by Ms. Gandhi. After arriving at the Dabolim airport in the afternoon by a special flight, Ms. Gandhi will visit Malvan, the constituency of Narayan Rane in Maharashtra, and return to Goa.

> PANAJI: > The Goa Cabinet on Tuesday decided to amend the Civil Service Maternity Leave Rules to extend 180 days of maternity leave to working women from all communities who adopt a child. Chief Minister Pratapsinh Rane said this decision was necessitated as Catholic women were not getting the benefit of maternity leave on adoption. — Special Correspondent

Two children die as hut catches fire

> Belgaum: > Two children died when a hut caught fire on the outskirts of Gundewadi village in Athani taluk on Monday.

The police identified the dead children as Salu Imamsab, 6, and his cousin Parveen Husseinsab Mujawar, 5. They were alone at home when the hut caught fire. Two cows, two oxen and two goats also perished in the fire. — Staff Correspondent

Alamatti dharna enters sixth week

> BIJAPUR: > The dharna by members of the Bijapur Zilla Samagra Neeravari Horata Samiti at the Alamatti dam site entered the sixth week on Tuesday.

The former Basavanabagewadi MLA and samiti convener, Sanganna Bellubbi, said the dharna will continue till the Government concedes their demands. Mr. Bellubbi said Water Resources Minister K.S. Eshwarappa has promised to visit Alamatti and hold talks with the agitators. — Staff Correspondent

Cardiac surgeons to hold annual meet

> Bangalore: > The Indian Association of Cardiovascular-Thoracic Surgeons (IACTS) will hold its 52nd annual conference at the NIMHANS Convention Centre here from Thursday. Karnataka High Court Chief Justice Cyriac Joseph will inaugurate the conference, said N. Prabhudev, President of the IACTS.

More than 1,200 cardiac surgeons are expected to participate in the conference. Over 150 papers will be presented. — Staff Reporter

Chief Minister to open IFWJ convention

> SHRAVANABELAGOLA: > The national convention of the Indian Federation of Working Journalists' (IFWJ) will begin here on Wednesday.

The President of the district unit of the Karnataka Union of Working Journalists' (KUWJ), Shivananda Tagadur, told presspersons here that the convention will be inaugurated by Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy. Governor, T.N. Chaturvedi will deliver the valedictory address. — Staff Correspondent

Cabinet berth sought for D.S. Veeraiah

> Bangalore: > The Karnataka Federation of Dalit Progressive Organisations has urged the Government to give important posts to people from the Dalit, Other Backward Classes and minority communities.

N. Murthy, President, Karnataka Dalit Sangharsh Samithi, told presspersons here on Tuesday that the recently constituted Cabinet has no representative from the right hand section of the Scheduled Castes. The federation urged the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to give D.S. Veeraiah, who belongs to the right hand section of the Scheduled Castes, a ministerial berth. — Staff Reporter
