CHENNAI : The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) Cellone mobile telephony coverage in the Tamil Nadu Telecom Circle will get a boost with the commissioning of nearly 1,800 towers in the next three months. Giving away the 2004-05 BSNL `Sarathy' and `Sanchar Seva Padak' awards to employees, T.S. Kuppusamy, Principal General Manager (Operations), Tamil Nadu Telecom Circle, said: "BSNL would provide 5 lakh fresh mobile connections. Our aim is to make the Tamil Nadu Telecom Circle and the Chennai Telephones attain the number one status in the all India network." He said the Tamil Nadu Circle was at the threshold of making big strides in providing broadband and Internet services. Under the direction of the Union Communications and Information Technology Minister Dayanidhi Maran, the Circle was getting ready to "reach remote villages with its broadband services." He said 16,000 subscribers have broadband network and by March-end, BSNL could provide over 12,000 broadband service connections. Currently, there were 1.3 lakh BSNL Internet users. He called on the staff and officers of the BSNL to strive hard to help it retain the subscriber base and fight the competition. The 2004-05 Sanchar Sarathy and Sanchar Seva Padak awardees were selected from the Central Telegraph Office, the wings of Civil, Electrical, Architectural, and Installation besides the Circle office. Principal Chief Electrical Engineer V.P. Gupta called for a synergy among all the wings of the Telecom Department so that it remained profitable and could serve the masses in the backdrop of opening up of the Telecom sector.
