Chitlangia leads

KOLKATA: Local golfer Sudeep Chitlangia got off to an early lead with a fine round of par 72 in the first round of the inaugural National mid-amateur golf championship at the Royal Calcutta Golf Club here on Tuesday.

The Indian Golf Union event is being played for the first time as a 72-hole stroke-play competition, at one of the most difficult courses in the country.

Chitlangia's round had four birdies and his effort was five strokes better than second-placed Lt. Col. S.D.S. Bath.

The National seniors (over 50), a 54-hole competition, will commence on Wednesday with defending champion Vikramjit Singh being challenged by six-time National amateur champion Ashok Malik and local favourite Lakshman Singh for top honours. — Special Correspondent
