Coimbatore: Officials of the Transport Department conducted surprise checks against violation of rules by omni buses on arterial roads in and around Salem and Coimbatore. Following complaints about violation of rules by omni bus operators, the Deputy Transport Commissioner, Coimbatore circle, K. Yogarajan (holding additional charge of Salem circle) ordered conduct of checks. The Regional Transport Officers and Motor Vehicle Inspectors were mobilised in seven districts - Coimbatore, Nilgiris, Erode, Namakkal, Salem, Dharmapuri and Krishnagiri districts. During the raids conducted on February 18 from 3 a.m. to 8 a.m., the officials' intercepted 366 omni buses and cases were registered against 83 buses. The authorities registered as many as 13 cases of unaccompanied luggage. A sum of Rs. 3,77,273 tax arrears was realised from the operators, while Rs. 16,100 was recovered as compounding fee for various offences. During the drive, 20 cases of driving without licence, 12 without insurance cover, 43 cases of dazzling headlights, 31 cases of air-horns, one case of an own board vehicle being operated as illicit taxi, six cases of tax evasion and nine cases of vehicles being operated without pollution control certificate was detected.
