CHENNAI: There may have been many factors that kept the MDMK and its leader Vaiko in the Democratic Progressive Alliance. The advice of Mr. Vaiko's octogenarian mother Mariammal could also have also been a tilting influence. Asked whether his mother had given him any advice on the question of which front to join, Mr. Vaiko said: "Yes, when I went to seek her blessings, she said: `You must not compromise our honour and self-respect. It is better to stay with the Elder [Mr. Karunanidhi]' But she did not put any pressure on me."
