Pulichintala named after K. L. Rao

Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD: The Pulichintala project (at Bellamkonda of Guntur district) has been named as K. L. Rao Sagar project, the icon of the irrigation engineering fraternity in the country.

This decision was announced by Chief Minister Y. S. Rajasekhara Reddy at a meeting with senior officials here on Tuesday. He also met a cross-section of people and political leaders earlier in the day when he observed that the Pulichintala Project, which was contemplated in 1903 and for which foundation stones were laid in 1961 and 1988, was now fructifying as envisaged by Dr. Rao.

The Chief Minister said the project was intended to protect the age-old irrigation of 13.08 lakh acres in backward areas and under developed lands in Krishna delta, as well as ensuring releases to the seed bedding and transplantation of Nagarjunasagar ayacut at an estimated cost of Rs.565.97 crores.

Recalling the technical excellence and vision of Kanuri Lakshman Rao, who hailed from the family of freedom fighters like Ayyadevara Kaleswararao, Komarraju Lakshmanarao, Komarraju Atchamamba, the Chief Minister said that he was made the Director (Designs) Central Water Commission & Central Power Commission, and his tenure in that position was extended after his retirement.
