Women constables to do patrol duty

KOZHIKODE: Women constables will be deployed for patrol duty in housing colonies in the city. This was stated by Inspector General of Police M.N. Krishnamoorthy at a meeting of representatives of housing colonies called by the police authorities here on Monday. City Police Commissioner H. Venkatesh was also present at the meeting.

The deployment of women police constables is an attempt to make it easier for women to report crimes to the police. It has been found that women are more cooperative in giving information about drug trafficking and similar offences than men.

Posting of women constables is also expected to bring to light more cases of domestic violence against women. On a suggestion from participants, it was agreed by the police authorities that a policeman would accompany the two women constables during their visits to housing colonies.

The presence of a policeman, it was thought, would make it easier for the male members of the family, who may have inhibitions to talk to women constables, to air their problems.

The police authorities also agreed to consider suggestion that addresses of persons staying on rent in housing colonies be communicated to the nearest police station.

The authorities were also urged to take action against illegal parking of heavy vehicles near housing colonies since it had been found to impede smooth movement of vehicular traffic. The IG said that deployment of women constables would help the police involve the community more effectively in maintaing law and order.
