Brothers get life term in murder case

Thrissur: Brothers Abdul Salam, 35, and Aboobacker Siddique, 39, of Ambalappadi in Malappuram district were on Tuesday sentenced to life imprisonment in the Francis murder case, by the Thrissur Fast Track Court judge P. K. Haneefa.

Salam and Siddique murdered their neighbour Parambuttuvila Veettil Francis, former headmaster of AMLP School, Pullooni, at Alathiyur in Malappuram district following a land dispute, the prosecution said.

The case was transferred from the Manjeri Sessions Court to Thrissur following an order of the Kerala High Court. — Staff Reporter

Woman acquitted

THRISSUR: Fast Track Sessions Judge Joseph D. Thekkekuruvinal has acquitted a woman who was accused of murdering her husband in their house at Arangottukara near Pattambi on February 16, 2003.

The judge, in his order, has said the prosecution could not establish that the accused, Padmavathi (50), had killed her husband. — Staff Reporter

Mahout stabbed

THRISSUR: A mahout attached to the Aanakotta (elephant yard) of Guruvayur Devaswom was stabbed by a group of persons on Tuesday evening. The victim, Gopalakrishnan, has been admitted to the Thrissur West Fort Hospital. According to the police the incident which happened right in front of the Aanakotta, appeared to be a sequel to the disputes among the mahouts. Another mahout who was reportedly among the group that attacked Mr. Gopalakrishnan has been taken into custody. — Staff Reporter

Telephone directory verification

KOLLAM: The data for BSNL's telephone directory of Kollam, updated till December 31, 2005, is available with the telephone exchanges of Kollam district for verification by users. The directory will be published by June. Users should check their directory entry before March 10 to confirm the correctness of the name, address and telephone number. If corrections are required, the same may be intimated to the officer in charge of the respective exchange or sent in writing to the directory section, Telephone Exchange, Chinnakada, Kollam-1. `Paloli's remarks out of frustration'

KOLLAM: District secretary of the CPI and district convener of the LDF K.R. Chandramohan has said that the LDF convener Paloli Mohammed Kutty's criticisms of the CPI (on the issue of taking the DIC(K) into the LDF fold), could be the result of frustration at being unable to criticise CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karat. He was talking to presspersons on Tuesday on the receptions planned for his party's Janakeeya Yatra in Kollam district. — Staff Reporter

PATHANAMTHITTA: Kadammanitta Ramakrishnan, Malayalam poet, will release `Anpoli,' house magazine of the Malayalam Department, NSS College, Pandalam on Wednesday, said C. Telecom adalat

KOLLAM: The next Kollam Telecom adalat will be held during the last week of March 2006. Grievances, which could not be settled through the normal channel, will be taken up at the adalat. Convicted police officer dismissed

Thiruvananthapuram: The State Government on Tuesday dismissed from service Dy.S.P. R. Shaji who was convicted last month by a court on charges of murder. Earlier, Director-General of Police Raman Sreevastava had given a report to the Government seeking the Dy.S.P.'s dismissal.

The police officer was found guilty of the murder of Praveen, a former associate. The body of Praveen was found dismembered and scattered in water bodies in Alappuzha district. — Staff Reporter

Bank strike on March 9

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The All India strike by bank employees will be on March 9 and not March 7 as reported.

The strike is in protest of discontinuation of employment on compassionate grounds and pension options, leader of Canara Bank Employees Union C.K. Pichumani said here on Tuesday.- Special Correspondent

AI initiative

NEDUMBASSERY: Air-India will operate daily service in the Mumbai-Kochi-Mumbai sector from April, which will help passengers from Kochi get immediate connection flights to New York, Paris and Frankfurt. At present, the airline is operating service in this sector six days a week. — A Correspondent

Physical education teachers' meet

KOCHI: The Kerala Private School Physical Education Teachers Association (KPSPETA) and the Kerala Departmental Physical Education Teachers Association will jointly organise the State convention of physical education teachers from February 23 to 25 at the Ernakulam Adhyapaka Bhavan. Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, KPSPETA general secretary Reji Ittoop said the Government should allot a period for physical education in class X as part of the grading system being introduced in school education. He said many physical education teachers working in high school and higher secondary were being given salary applicable to upper primary school teachers. He also demanded revision of kit allowance to physical education teachers. — Staff Reporter

Rural electrification project

KOCHI: The Kerala Electric Traders Association plans to launch a rural electrification programme in a tribal village in the State. The village is yet to be identified. The programme will be organised as part of the ongoing Silver Jubilee of the association. This was disclosed by the association president Sudhir Menon at a press conference here on Tuesday. — Staff Reporter
