Central Excise Commissioner, 3 others held on graft charge

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: Amid high drama, a Commissioner of Central Excise, Tiruchi, and three others were arrested by the Anti-Corruption Branch of the CBI on Tuesday in a case relating to alleged bribery.

A CBI official said a Superintendent in the Central Excise office allegedly demanded money from a person who was running a steel rolling mill in Pudukkottai district, for favours in an appeal relating to the levy of a penalty. The owner alerted the CBI about the demand and the agency laid a trap.

The CBI official said the owner handed over the amount to the Superintendent, who, in turn, took the complainant to the Commissioner of Central Excise (Appeals), Tiruchi. The amount was allegedly given to him.

It was further alleged that following a tip-off from the Superintendent that a CBI team had arrived, another Superintendent informed the Commissioner who gave the money to him. He, in turn, gave the money to another person.

All the four have been arrested.
