Schools for mentally challenged

Staff Reporter

Rs. 1,000 monthly allowance sought for purchase of life-saving drugs

CHENNAI: The State does not run a single permanent special school for the mentally challenged, alleged members of the Confederation Of Organisations For Persons with Mental Disability.

Addressing media persons here on Tuesday, they said several special children (facing various types and levels of mental challenge) would take out a rally from Munroe Statue to Fort St. George on Thursday to highlight their demands which include granting of monthly medical allowance and provision of a special school at each taluk.

"We don't have accurate and comprehensive statistics on the mentally challenged. The number of children and the number of special schools has no correlation. We can bring about a change only if sufficient data is available," said S. Namburajan, federation Secretary.
