CHENNAI: As part of its efforts to ensure error-free final rolls, the Election Commission on Tuesday deputed six teams of officials to the State for overseeing disposal of claims and objections. Poll personnel in the State have taken up the task of processing and verifying 19 lakh applications, received during the summary revision with January 1, 2006 as the qualifying date, seeking inclusion of names in the electoral rolls. The panels will oversee the work.
Random checks
Through random checks, they will ascertain if the claims and objections are being disposed of as per the Election Commission's recommendations. According to State Election Department sources, the panels are led by Secretaries K.R. Prasad, Tapas Kumar and A.K. Majumdar and Under Secretaries Varinder Kumar, N.N. Butolia and K.N. Bhar. The panels will cover all the 30 districts, with each team taking care of five districts. They will tour the State till Friday and meet District Election Officers (DEOs) and Electoral Registration Officers in the districts. The team led by Mr. Prasad will visit Chennai, Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Vellore and Tiruvannamalai districts. Mr. Majumdar's team will assess the verification work in Villupuram, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Tiruvarur and Thanjavur districts. The team headed by Mr. Varinder Kumar will cover Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, Salem, Namakkal and Erode. The group headed by Mr. Butolia will take care of Perambalur, Tiruchi, Karur, Pudukottai and Sivaganga districts. Mr. K.N. Bhar will assess verification work in Coimbatore, the Nilgris, Dindigul, Theni and Madurai districts. The verification process in Tirunelveli, Virudhunagar, Tuticorin, Ramanathapuram and Kanyakumari districts will be assessed by the team led by Mr. Tapas Kumar. The team members are likely to meet Chief Electoral Officer Naresh Gupta and hold discussions after completing their tour of the districts, the sources said. Election Commissioner N. Gopalaswami is undertaking a two-day visit to the State on February 23 and 24 to review the disposal of claims and objections submitted during the summary revision, they said.
