HYDERABAD: Mayor T. Krishna Reddy on Tuesday said that all efforts would be made to complete pending `sub-projects' of stormwater drains before the start of the rainy season this year. Of the 170-km-length of primary, secondary and tertiary stormwater drains crisscrossing the twin cities and within the Municipal Corporation of Hyderabad limits, 14 sub-projects have been identified for immediate repair in critically affected areas. Length of these sub-projects is 40.39 km and estimated cost is Rs. 139.30 crores. The Mayor inspected three of the sub-projects on Murki nala and Hussainsagar surplus nala at stretches near Falaknuma, Fever Hospital and Yosufguda. Mr. Reddy, also ex-officio Chairman of the Standing Committee, along with fellow members undertook the visit to ascertain the ground situation before according administrative sanction for the works estimated at a little above Rs. 9 crores.
Work proposals
Eighteen works pertaining to retaining walls were to be undertaken alongside these drains. Chief Engineer Dhan Singh and Superintending Engineer Y. Chalapathi Rao said that work proposals were formulated wherever `free spaces' were available to protect the drains from further encroachments. Murki nala begins from Palle Cheruvu passing through the old city regions of Falaknuma, Yakutpura, Dabeerpura, Malakpet and joins the Musi at Chaderghat. Hussainsagar surplus nala starts from the lake passing through Gandhinagar, Ashoknagar, Barkatpura, Nallakunta and Amberpet before joining the Musi.
Rental value
The committee also went round Moti Market near Chaderghat where it felt the rental values were very low. Mr. Reddy stressed the need to modernise all markets and reminded the Government on payment of tax dues to the MCH. "The Government has to allot at least Rs. 50 crores for modernisation of markets and construction of new slaughterhouses. Chengicherla slaughterhouse has no takers because of the promise of modernising old ones and we need funds," he added.
