Staff Reporter

HAL signs pact with BMP, private firm on the project

  • The Public-Private Participation project is estimated to cost Rs. 8 crores
  • BMP will contribute Rs. 6 crores and the remaining amount will be borne by private participant
  • Road will be developed in accordance with Indian Roads Congress standards

BANGALORE: Harried users of the 4.5-km Suranjan Das Road connecting the Old Madras Road and Airport Road can heave a sigh of relief.

Paving the way to widen the busy road to a four-lane stretch, the Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) on Tuesday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) and Bagmane Developers Private Limited.

    Three-phase project

The Public-Private Participation project is estimated to cost Rs. 8 crores and will be completed in three phases over the next one year.

HAL will execute the project. The MoU was signed by HAL Managing Director A.K. Saxena, BMP Commissioner K. Jothiramalingam and Raja Bagmane, Managing Director of Bagmane Developers.

The improvement and expansion of the road, according to the MoU, is aimed at ensuring smooth flow of traffic on the road and to make it an effective corridor between Old Madras Road and Airport Road.

    Project report

The civic body will prepare a detailed project report, cost estimate, bill of quantities and tender documents and also provide the liaison with various government departments.

While BMP, being the lead investor, will contribute Rs. 6 crores, the remaining amount will be borne by the private participant. HAL being a Central Government organisation is willing to part with the land required to widen the road.

Suranjan Das Road was once a service road exclusively of HAL, which eventually became a crucial link between Airport Road and Old Madras Road.

With traffic congestion mounting on the two roads, this link road had become extremely congested in recent months.

    Technical assistance

With the three MoU partners jointly providing technical assistance for the smooth execution of the road development project, the road will be developed in accordance with Indian Roads Congress (IRC) standards, a statement here said.
