KOCHI: The Animal Husbandry Department conducted random checking at chicken farms in the city on Tuesday in the wake of bird flu threat. The checking was led by District Veterinary Officer N. Shanti, at two farms in Mattancherry. The workers at the chicken farms were asked to wear gloves while handling the birds and to maintain hygienic conditions as a precautionary measure. Daily surveys and inspections have been ordered in the wake of the bird flu threat. A decision has been taken to hold awareness classes for the workers, most of whom are migrants. There are 120 official chicken farms in the district, which will be checked at random. There are also big farms where more than 1,000 chickens are kept.
