KOCHI: The Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) will award work order in a couple of days for survey of the first phase of the proposed ring road. The ring road is one of the key projects to be taken up by the Authority. The 65-km road will change the city's face and will bring in a new episode in traffic planning in the city, said Antony Isaac, GCDA Chairman. The decision for the survey was approved by the general council meeting held on Saturday. The road will begin from the first Goshree Bridge and will go through Chathiath, Vaduthala Jetty, Cheranalloor, Kothad, Chennur, Thundathikadavu, Varappuzha, Alangad, Athani, Puthencruz and Udayamperoor before joining the National Highway 47 at Kumbalam. The ring road will cross NH-17 at Varappuzha. During the first phase, the stretch between Chathiath and Varappuzha, which will come to around 10 km, will be completed. Road up to Vaduthala is going along the banks of backwater and survey is required for the rest of the stretch, as it has buildings. Even though the survey could be completed in three weeks, starting of the work would take time as land needs to be acquired. Also, the estimate of the project could be finalised only after the survey is over, said V. Gopalakrishna Pillai, Senior Town Planner. The GCDA did a preliminary survey, but this alignment has now been changed. Though two bridges need to be constructed as part of the ring road, only the Thundathikadavu-Chennur Bridge will be constructed in the first phase. The alignment has been adjusted to include the existing Cheranalloor-Kothad Bridge. "A new bridge will have to be constructed between Cheranalloor and Kothad, as the proposed ring road is four-track and existing bridge will not suffice," said Mr. Pillai. The soil testing for Thundathikadavu-Chennur Bridge will begin soon. 's aim is
