Coimbatore: Over 180 students and agricultural graduates turned up at the Placement Centre of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU), as the first job fair of the year got underway, here on Tuesday.

"Eleven agri-based companies have come today for campus recruitment," V. Dhandapani, Director of Students' Welfare at the University, told The Hindu .

The recruiters were from Tamil Nadu Precision Farming, TNAU; Herbalway, Chennai; D1Oils, Coimbatore; Sakthi Sugars, Pollachi; IASC, Coimbatore; Mahalir Narpanimandram, Chennai; Harrisons Malayalam, Kochi; Senthil Seeds, Dharapuram; Kothari Sugars, Trichy and Kodrej Hi-Care, Chennai.

Opportunities

"In the first job fair that was held last year, about 300 to 400 candidates attended," said M. Subash Chandra Bose, Professor (Students' Welfare) at the University. "At the second one in 2005 there were an equal number. But at today's fair there are only 180, because fewer candidates are unemployed. We are reaching a stage of zero unemployment."

"We have so far helped 700 students find employment, by conducting 66 campus interviews and two job fairs, over two-and-a-half years. More will get employed at today's job fair. Out of those employed so far, 52 have been recruited by banks," he observed.

Representatives from Canara Bank, State Bank of India, Syndicate Bank and Lakshmi Vilas Bank had recruited candidates from the University.

"After seeing the performance of our students, State Bank of India had made a second visit within a year. Out of 41 candidates who attended, the bank selected 27, though they had wanted to recruit only 15 or 16 candidates," Prof. Bose observed.

Presentation

Candidates who had come for selection first sat through a presentation by each of the recruiting companies and got to know about the job profile, expected salary, opportunities for growth and place of work.

University authorities provided separate counters for each recruiting company, where candidates obtained further information on the recruitment process. Candidates were asked to restrict themselves to a choice of only three or four companies. Companies were free to hold written tests or conduct interviews and group discussions.

Coaching classes

Prof. Dhandapani said the University was offering coaching classes for students preparing for higher studies abroad. During the past three years, 37 graduates had gone abroad to countries such as the US, Canada, UK, Australia, Japan, Germany, Taiwan and South Korea.
