COIMBATORE : The Coimbatore Corporation has drafted a fresh proposal to provide flyovers, ring roads, subways, multi-tier parking lots, more drinking water and a clean city at Rs.1,311crores. The Corporation has added more schemes to its earlier proposal of projects for Rs.534 crores. The fresh proposal is to be submitted to the Union Ministry for Urban Development for 50 per cent grant under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM). If approved by the Centre, the schemes are to be implemented over a period of seven years. The State Government will provide 20 per cent grant and the Corporation needs to fork out only 20 per cent.
Huge cost
The scheme has provided the civic body with the opportunity to implement schemes that had been held up because of huge cost. On Tuesday, Mayor T. Malaravan, Corporation Commissioner Anil Meshram and Deputy Mayor K. Raghupathy discussed the fresh proposal with leaders of parties in the Council, officials of National and State Highways, Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board, Tamil Nadu Slum Clearance Board (TNSCB) and representatives of the Chennai-based consultants for the scheme Wilbur Smith. The Mayor told presspersons after the meeting that the Centre wanted the Corporation to prepare a vision statement that included not only the cost of various projects but also how they benefited the people. Pending schemes such as underground sewers (Rs.193 crores) for half of the 105-sq.km. city, a water scheme for Rs.76.37 crores, waste management at Rs.69.45 crores, multi-tier parking lots at Rs.12 crores have been included in the proposal. The Corporation plans to construct two flyovers for Rs.115 crores and 16 subways at a cost of Rs.45 crores. Subways will be built at Gandhipuram, Railway Junction, Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, Ukkadam, Town Hall, Oppanakara Street-Big Bazaar Street Junction, Clock Tower, P.S.G. Tech. Junction, Ramanathapuram, Singanallur, Uppilipalayam, G.R.G. School, P.S.G College of Arts and Science, Women's Polytechnic, Lakshmi Mills and Aarvee Hotel Junction. Three ring roads have also been proposed at Rs.126 crores. The ministry has also asked the Corporation to formulate a City Corporate Plan that includes public/private party partnership in areas such as waste management.
Improving facilities
Besides the Corporation, proposals for new roads or improvements to existing ones under the Highways (national and State) within the city have been made for Rs.1,436 crores. Slum development programmes are to be implemented by the TNSCB at Rs.281.50 crores. The proposal will be placed in the Council on Wednesday for approval and forwarded to the Centre through the municipal administration department in Chennai.
