Coimbatore: State-level tournaments and athletic events will mark the conclusion of the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of the Government Polytechnic College, here on Friday.
Various programmes
A release from the principal, R. Arangarajoo said that during the Diamond Jubilee Year 2005-06, the institution had organised paper presentations, quiz programmes, special lectures and technical symposiums. Started in 1945 as the Arthur Hope Polytechnic by the late G. D. Naidu, the institution functioned in the UMS Building in the City and moved to the present building in 1954. A name change took place in 1955-56 and the institution became the Government Polytechnic. It now has 1,100 full time and 360 part time students.
Continuing Education
A Continuing Education Centre at the polytechnic college offers technical courses for school dropouts, housewives and unemployed graduates.
Placement cell
An entrepreneurship management development cell and a placement cell helped the students take up gainful careers. Besides diploma courses in civil, mechanical, electrical, production engineering, and electronics and communication, the polytechnic college also offered part time diploma courses in civil, mechanical and electrical engineering.
