Low-cost housing project for industrial workers inaugurated

  • Letters to some allottees of the 1,000 flats handed over
  • Another 2,164 flats to be allotted through draw of lots soon
  • Provision for small market of around 500 shops

NEW DELHI: Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday said 40,000 new low-cost housing units would be built in the Capital before the Commonwealth Games-2010 to meet the shortage of residential accommodation.

Inaugurating a low-cost housing project built for industrial workers by the Delhi State Industrial Development Corporation (DSIDC) under the Rajiv Gandhi Housing Project scheme at Bawana Industrial Complex, Ms. Dikshit also handed over the allotment letters to some of the allottees of the 1,000 flats for which the draw was held.

Industry Minister Mangat Ram Singhal presided over the function.

Ms. Dikshit said this complex consists of houses costing a little under Rs. 2 lakhs per unit in an eco-friendly and self-contained 23-acre complex at Bawana.

The complex has 3,164 dwelling units that may not be sufficient to meet the requirements of the workers of the 16,000 units that are being relocated.

A provision was also being made for a small market of around 500 shops for the local people to meet their daily needs.

The Chief Minister said that another 2,164 flats would be allotted through draw of lots shortly. She disclosed that the Delhi Government was approaching the Union Government for allocation of funds under the Jawahar Lal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission.

Mr. Singhal said the Delhi Government was in the process of constructing more low-cost flats all over Delhi. A 12-acre plot had been earmarked in Narela for construction of 1,500 low-cost houses.

Similar projects were being considered for Bhorgarh, Karala and Kanjhawala where more than 10,000 bighas of land had been acquired.

He said the Government was keen on providing basic facilities including schools, dispensaries, community halls, market, clean drinking water, sewage and parks.

Mr. Singhal said DSIDC had set up a 760-hectare complex at Bawana to provide an alternative industrial zone for more than 16,000 industrial units being relocated from various parts of the Capital.
