Union Minister to inaugurate training centre for Adivasis

Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Union Minister for Youth Affairs Mani Sankar Aiyar will inaugurate the training centre for Adivasi youth set up by the Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan at Malampuzha next month.

This was stated by Sangathan vice-chairman Kodikkunnil Suresh at a press conference here on Wednesday.

The Sangathan, in collaboration with the UNDP, will organise awareness programmes, set up `jagratha samithis' and information centres in youth clubs to battle the worldwide menace of human trafficking.

This Rs.2-crore programme being implemented in 10 States will be on in all the 14 districts of Kerala, he said.

Teens clubs will be set up at villages with help from the United Nations Population Fund to help in the physical and mental development of adolescents. This core programme also entails training programmes for adolescents and their parents.

While this programme will be on in 60 selected districts in the country, in Kerala, this will be organised in Wayanad, Palakkad and Kollam, Mr. Suresh said.

The Sangathan also plans to organise a drive to popularise Indian systems of medicine as part of a nationwide drive to be held in collaboration with the Department of AYUSH.

In Kerala, this programme will be held at the Anchal block of Kollam district.

The Nehru Yuva kendras in the State will organise `Shramadan' camps to assist in construction activities in the tsunami-hit regions of the State. Twenty camps will be held in each of these districts and volunteers will help in the setting up of youth clubs, anganwadis, community halls, schools and playgrounds.

The Sangathan has formulated a project for helping rural youth find employment in rural adventure tourism. Trial projects held in Ernakulam and Idukki districts have yielded satisfactory results, he added.

Books invited

The Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan has invited book publishers to submit sample copies of books for the rural libraries that the organisation plans to set up in eight districts in the State.

Only those books that have been published in the last three years will be considered; textbooks will not be considered. Not more than 20 books will be selected from one publisher.

One copy of the book should be sent, before March 6, to the Nehru Yuva Kendra office behind the Press Club building, Thiruvananthapuram, a press note issued here said.
