SERVICE TO HUMANITY: Marumalarchi Blood Donors' Club members donating blood at the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital on Wednesday, to save a one-and-half year-old boy.

TIRUNELVELI: When Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary Vaiko decided to start the Marumalarchi Blood Donors' Club (MBDC) a year ago, with his followers as members, he would not have dreamt that the life-saving venture would give him so much satisfaction.

Blood donated by the members is administered to a patient irrespective of his/her social status or political affiliation. MBDC members' timely help on Wednesday saved the life of a one-and-a-half year-old boy, admitted to a private hospital here.

When doctors asked Srinivasan, father of Nithin Krishna, to bring A1-B Positive blood at the earliest to save his son, he contacted the Tirunelveli Medical College Hospital (TMCH). The hospital sought MBDC's help.

On receiving the SOS, MDMK Tirunelveli city secretary K.M.A. Nizam rushed to the TMCH. On the way he contacted the volunteers. Ten members with a similar blood group were identified and directed to the private hospital. While two of them could not donate due to blood pressure, the others did. One of them, who did so without having his breakfast, fainted. But timely medical assistance and breakfast saw the youth getting up with a smile.
