BANGALORE: Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa must apologise for his reported comment that "money for ministerial berth is a culture of the Congress and not the Bharatiya Janata Party", V.S. Ugrappa, spokesman of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee, said here on Wednesday. He told presspersons that the "power-hungry" BJP and its coalition partner, the Janata Dal (Secular), are "given to pecuniary considerations in granting Cabinet berths". It is the BJP's "Mukhyamantri" Chandru who accused the party of favouring "money and muscle power" in last week's Cabinet expansion, and not the Congress or any other party, he said. He said the Congress has never indulged in such methods for choosing Ministers. The BJP should not indulge in mudslinging, and if it continues to "cross the limits" the Congress will be forced to launch an agitation demanding an apology from Mr. Yediyurappa, he said. Prakash Rathod, MLC, said the "money for office" culture is more identified with the BJP and its allies. The visit of Congress Working Committee member A.K. Antony to Bangalore to seek the views of party MLCs and MLAs on appointing a Leader of the Opposition in the Upper House was postponed as he was indisposed. Asked when the consultations will be completed and the new Leader of the Opposition appointed, Mr. Ugrappa said it is left to the party High Command.
