Farm workers stage dharna

Nellore: A large number of farm labourers staged a dharna before the mandal revenue office, Sangam on Wednesday, demanding proper remunerative price for paddy. They alleged that due to poor remunerative price, they were undergoing severe losses for the last six months. Staff Reporter

KADAPA: Police arrested over 50 CPI functionaries at Kadapa railway station on Wednesday and foiled their bid to stage rail roko decrying hike in prices of petrol, diesel and essential commodities. Man electrocuted

ANANTAPUR: One Hussain (50) of Vankarakunta in Nallamada mandal was electrocuted accidentally in his house on Wednesday, when he tried to switch on a light. According to the police, he fell to the ground due to heavy electric shock and suffered a severe head injury and died on the spot. Staff Reporter

Representatives of drug firms fined, imprisoned

HYDERABAD: Representatives of 11 drug firms across the State have been convicted and awarded punishment by the judicial first class magistrates for violating the provisions of various Acts. According to a press release issued by V. Dinesh Reddy, Director-General, Drugs and Copyright, Drugs Control Administration, here, on Wednesday, the conviction ranged from imprisonment of three months to one year. The firms were also penalised Rs.1,000 to Rs.5,000 for violation of various Acts. - Special Correspondent

Student ends life

ANANTAPUR: An Intermediate Second Year student of the Andhra Pradesh Residential Junior College at Kodigenahalli in Parigi mandal of the district, Nagulmeera, (18), allegedly hanged himself in the hostel room on Tuesday night. He was a native of Yellampalli in Machavaram mandal of Guntur district.

According to the police, the boy left a suicide note saying that he was taking the extreme step as he had failed in love.-Staff Reporter

TDP leader killed

MAHABUBNAGAR: Tension prevailed in Kothakota mandal headquaters town and Nirvin village following the alleged murder of a Telugu Desam leader and Nirvin water shed committee chairperson M. Mahesh on Tuesday night. According to the information reaching here, Mahesh was waylaid by some miscreants while he was going to his native place from Palem. Over 18 stab injuries were found on his body. Suspecting the hand of a Congress leader of the village, his supporters set ablaze a poultry form.- Correspondent

Office-bearers elected

HYDERABAD: G. Narayana Rao is the new president of the Andhra Pradesh Cooperative Service Association. The other office-bearers are: A.V. Anil Kumar (general secretary) and Y.V. Two persons hacked to death

NALGONDA: Two persons were allegedly axed to death by their rivals to settle scores under the Suryapet police circle in the last 24 hours. According to Inspector M. Tirupatanna, a lorry driver, Konne Venkateswarlu, 35, of Lingala in Penpahad mandal was allegedly murdered by three persons while he was going to his village after attending a court trial at Miryalaguda on Wednesday. In another incident, a cable operator Kurre Venkateswarlu, 30, was allegedly axed to death by his rivals at Kusumavarigudem in Suryapet mandal on Tuesday night.- Staff Reporter

SCR union opposes recruitment move

HYDERABAD: The South Central Railway Mazdoor Union has condemned the SCR administration for their decision to take 500 Scheduled Tribe candidates belonging to Tamil Nadu for the Class IV posts. The Union held an emergency meeting on Wednesday and charged that the Railway Recruitment Board, Chennai, has ignored ST youth in Andhra Pradesh.-Staff Reporter

Minority status to B.Ed colleges opposed

HYDERABAD: The State committee of Students' Federation of India (SFI) has criticised Government's move to grant minority status to 30 B.Ed colleges. In a statement here on Wednesday, SFI secretary K.
