Autorickshaw driver rewarded for bravery

Staff Reporter

MADURAI: An autorickshaw driver who chased a chain-snatcher and apprehended him was rewarded for his bravery on Wednesday.

The driver, R. Baskaran (32) of Mathichiyam, was passing through Gandhi Museum on Tuesday evening when he saw a cyclist snatching the chain of a girl, S. Sowmya (20), near the Poonga Murugan Temple.

Mr. Baskaran chased the suspect in his autorickshaw and cornered him near the Anna Bus Stand.

Though the accused, K. Chandramohan (29) of Jeeva Nagar, brandished a knife and threatened to kill, he overpowered him and alerted the local police.

The two-sovereign gold chain was restored to the victim.

The Commissioner of Police, Narinder Pal Singh, congratulated the autorickshaw driver for his good work and presented a cash award.

The accused was produced in a city court and remanded to judicial custody.

The Tallakulam police have registered a case.
