Focus on improving nutrition level of tribals

Special Correspondent

JAIPUR: The Rajasthan Government is considering implementation of a "mission mode" project for improving the nutrition standards of tribal population in the State by involving the officials of Panchayati Raj, Education and Medical and Health Departments. A mission document in association with the UNICEF is being formulated for the purpose.

The Minister for Women and Child Development, Kanakmal Katara, stating this at a workshop here on Wednesday, pointed out that nutrition levels in the tribal-dominated districts were influenced by the social, cultural and economic background of local communities. These factors would be analysed before evolving a comprehensive action plan for nutritional security of tribals.

Mr. Katara said the State Economic Policies and Reforms Council had incorporated improvement in nutrition status of tribal children as an important subject on its agenda. He said the work in this regard should include availability of clean drinking water, proper sanitation and supply of nutritional elements in food in sufficient quantity. The Principal Secretary, Women and Child Development, Alka Kala, said the high infant mortality rate in Rajasthan was an outcome of malnutrition.
