State gets one-time special assistance of Rs. 200 crores for priority projects

NEW DELHI: Granting a one-time special assistance of Rs. 200 crores for priority projects, the Planning Commission on Wednesday approved a Rs.4,000-crore Annual Plan outlay for Uttaranchal for 2006-07, which is over 48 per cent more than the outlay for the current fiscal.

Interestingly, the State Government had asked for a Plan outlay of Rs.3,787 crores but the Planning Commission hiked the amount to Rs.4,000 crores. For 2005-06, the outlay was pegged at Rs.2,700 crores.

A major chunk of the outlay has been earmarked for the transport sector (Rs.580 crores) followed by education (Rs.520 crores), energy (Rs.452 crores), urban development (Rs.317 crores), rural development (Rs.260 crores), forestry (Rs.248 crores), health (Rs.173 crores), water supply (Rs.167 crores), irrigation (Rs.141 crores) and IT (Rs.121 crores). "The hiked outlay is in recognition of my Government's good work and developmental initiatives.

Top priority

The State Government will accord top-most priority to the development of infrastructure, especially roads and power, in order to give much needed impetus to the new State's growth," said Uttaranchal Chief Minister Narayan Dutt Tiwari after his meeting with Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia here.

Lauding the State Government's efforts to develop Uttaranchal's economy and infrastructure, Dr. Ahluwalia said the Himalayan State's economic indicators were showing positive trends and the momentum for development was visible. He, however, asked the State Government to check losses in the power sector and improve its depleting forest cover.

He also called for greater involvement of women in agriculture and focused attention on power, tourism and horticulture.
