CHENNAI: The Electronics and Communication Students Association of Meenakshi Sundararajan Engineering College organised a national-level symposium on Tuesday. As many as 550 students from over 60 colleges all over the country took part. The symposium was inaugurated by Varadan, Director, Manufacturing of Visteon India, which deals in automative products. In his keynote address, Mr. Varadan emphasised the vital importance of consistency, leadership skill and development of core competencies. He urged the students to apply the knowledge they acquired to solve problems and come up with innovative solutions. This, he insisted, was the only way that students could ensure that they were "industry-fit" when they pass out of college. Selvam, General Manager, BSNL, illustrated the profound growth of telecommunications over just 120 years. He urged the students to hone their technical skills to bridge the gap between syllabi and current technology. The paper presentation event received over 97 papers, of which 12 were shortlisted and presented before a panel of judges from Anna University. The mock interview event was another favourite among the participants, who would soon be attending real campus interviews. The group discussion was moderated by Amalraj, HR Flextronics; Vikram, Director, Meenakshi School of Management; and Srinivasan, CTO, Reliance, Tamil Nadu. The other events included circuit debugging, dumb charades and adzap. Mithradatic, a technical quiz, was a major draw with the students. The popular Scrap Shimmer event's focus was on designing posters from electronic waste. On the sidelines of this event, awareness was created about the 15,000 tonnes of electronic waste that finds its way into India and the thousands of families that recover products from these hazardous conditions.
