MADURAI: The Corporation Council meeting on Wednesday witnessed a couple of bouts of altercation between the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) members and councillors belonging to other parties. The Mayor, C. Ramachandran, had to adjourn the proceedings for a brief while as the AIADMK leader, S.D. Jeyabalan, wanted to thank the Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, for extending help to the daughter of former Corporation councillor, Leelavathi. The Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) Councillor was murdered a few years ago. The CPI-M members objected to this. They were supported by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam members. As members from both sides did not heed the Mayor's request to maintain calm, Mr. Ramachandran adjourned the meeting. Later, when Mr. Jeyabalan wanted to know the action taken to fill up vacancies in the Corporation, following the announcement made by the Chief Minister lifting the ban on recruitment, the Corporation Deputy Commissioner, C. Rajamani, said that the Government order was yet to be received. Pointing to the recruitment process set in motion by the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board, the AIADMK leader asked the officials of the local body to take efforts to get the order. Mr. Rajamani said that enquiries had revealed that even the Collectorate was yet to receive the orders. To this, the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam members booed their rivals. The Council once again witnessed uproarious scenes, when the CPI-M leader, S. Mahalingam, complained that it was only the AIADMK general secretary, Jayalalithaa, who did not visit the house of Leelavathi.
Action against former official
During the discussion, the Deputy Mayor, S.S. Ghouse Basha, alleged that the service records of some Corporation employees were missing and many retired officials could not get their pension benefits. The DMK member, P. Packianathan, said that one former employee of the Corporation, in connivance with a section of staff, was trying to fleece the employees to get their retirement benefits. When the Mayor sought strict action against the accused person, the Commissioner, D.J. Dinakkaren, promised to take police action.
Land for software park
The Mayor moved a resolution directing the Corporation Commissioner to find a suitable land in the city for setting up a software park. The Union Minister for Communication and Information Technology, Dayanidhi Maran, had promised to do the needful for the purpose, if the Corporation provided five acres of land in the city.
