Kerala
The threat of avian flu has resulted in a sharp decline in takers for non-vegetarian dishes in the hotels in Kozhikode city and elsewhere in the district. The usually busy hotels where customers came in droves to enjoy the chicken dishes have recorded a drop in the number of their customers. Although advertisements have been inserted in newspapers and flashed on television screens on the safety of consuming chicken and eggs, people are still reluctant to taste these dishes. But fishmongers are doing roaring business. The sale of fish has grown exponentially; so also the cost of fish. Stalls selling fish are crowded, while there are only a handful of people at chicken stalls and hotels. A year ago, when Tsunami struck the Kerala coast, leaving a trail of destruction, it was an equally bad time for the fishmongers. Authorities must step up awareness to erase the fear from the minds of people.
