A guiding light for the youth

Staff Reporter

KOCHI: Reason, religion and kindness were the pillars on which Don Bosco, a humble priest from Piedmont in Italy, built a global congregation of men and women dedicated to the care of the youth.

The Preventive System, as Don Bosco's system of education has come to be called, is today espoused by the Salesians of Don Bosco, the centenary of whose arrival in India is being celebrated this year.

The name of Don Bosco has been part and parcel of Kochi's culture thanks to Don Bosco Vaduthala that is now in its Silver Jubilee year. The jubilee celebrations will begin next Sunday with a torch doing the ceremonial round beginning at Don Bosco, Aluva, and reaching the Jubilee Nagar in the evening.

Salesian Provincial for the Bangalore Province Jose Kuttiyanimattathil will lead the solemn mass that will begin at 3.30 p.m. The Silver Jubilee meet will be graced by Varkey Vithayathil, Cardinal.

The Silver Jubilee celebrations have been marked by a gesture from the Salesians who will build 50 houses for the poor. The key to the first of the houses will be given away on Sunday.
