Kochi
Close on the heels of three deaths and dozens falling ill after consuming food catered by a prominent restaurant in Kochi city, many people fell ill owing to food poisoning after eating from a star hotel in the city. Two outlets of the hotel remained closed since the deaths. Chief Food Inspector, Ernakulam, K Ajithkumar says that the three died of cholera. "The bacteria must have been found either in the water or rice used to make food. In both the cases, we collected food and water samples from their kitchens. We have also intensified our drive to collect samples from hotels, to ensure that only food cooked under hygienic conditions is served." The department also intends to organise an awareness campaign on `Food safety and quality control', in the first week of March. On their part, members of the public have been asked to be wary of eating uncooked food and water from eateries. This is because instances of food poisoning increase with the onset of summer.
