Beating the heat
As mercury levels rise steadily in the city, soft-drink outlets and juice vends are doing brisk business. Served in brimming mugs with little ceremony, these natural coolers seem to be giving the artificial drink manufacturers a run for their money.
Watermelon, in the form of iced red juice, is in high demand. The fruit sells at Rs.7 a kg in retail and the juice at Rs.5 for a tall glass. A harbinger of summer, watermelon comes to the city mainly from Kambam and Theni in Tamil Nadu. The `nongu,' kernel of the palm-nut, is another `imported' cooler that is vying for attention. It is served in mugs with a spoon for you to scoop up the partly-beaten kernel.
