To meet demand for hydraulic cylinders

BANGALORE: Wipro Infrastructure Engineering Ltd (formerly Wipro Fluid Power) is ramping up capacity by opening a new plant in Chennai.

It is looking at setting up bases in the U.S. and Europe to tap the rising demand for hydraulic cylinders, valves and pumps triggered by the infrastructure boom in India and meet the needs of global customers.

The Chennai plant, which started operations early this month as an export oriented unit (EOU), will have a capacity to make 1.50 lakh units, while the one located at Peenya near Bangalore is being augmented to produce 1.50 lakh to 1.75 lakh units from the current level of one lakh units.

The Chennai plant caters to the tractor steering requirements of the global markets while the Peenya plant makes small and big construction equipment and tractor steerings.

The Hindupur plant located 90 km north of Bangalore makes small construction equipment.

"What swung the decision in favour of Chennai was the proximity to the port,'' Anurag Behar, Managing Director, Wipro Infrastructure Engineering Ltd, told The Hindu on Thursday.

Having grabbed a big chunk of the domestic construction equipment hydraulics market with a share of 68 per cent, Wipro Infrastructure is gearing up to compete globally with giants such as Parker, Eaton and RexRoth.

Currently, the company is a tier ine component vendor to many global original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) such as Japanese Komatsu.

Though, the company earned only Rs. 16 crore from overseas business out of its total revenues of Rs. 240 crore last fiscal, the global business has been growing at the rate of 70-80 per cent.
